Houston: The Story Behind The Dream House - Sassy Jones

Houston: The Story Behind The Dream House

Sometimes the most important moments in our lives don't arrive with certainty. They arrive with a question. For years, Houston had been on my heart. Our customers there have supported Sassy Jones in such a beautiful way, and I knew eventually we would have a physical presence in the city. The only problem was that I thought I knew exactly where it should be.

The Galleria.

It seemed obvious. It's where everyone points when they talk about shopping in Houston. It's prestigious. It's established. On paper, it checked every box. So I got on a plane and started making trips to Houston in 2023. I walked sooo many properties. I explored soooo many neighborhoods. I sat in sooo much traffic. I observed sooo many people. I listened. I tried to imagine our customer moving through her day and where Sassy Jones fit into her life.

And yet, something wouldn't settle. The Galleria looked right, but it didn't feel right. I couldn't explain it. As entrepreneurs, we're often taught to trust the data, and I absolutely believe in data. But I've also learned that some of the most important decisions I've ever made weren't made from a spreadsheet. They were made from discernment.

One evening, after another trip to Houston, I went to sleep still wrestling with the question. And then something crazzyyy happened. That same night, without discussing it beforehand, Keon and I had the same dream.

Not similar.

The same.We both woke up with the exact same feeling. The Galleria wasn't it and the timing wasn't right. I know how that sounds. But sometimes God speaks in ways that don't fit neatly inside a business plan. And truthfully, because I felt that's what I should do according to industry standards, I paid for the Galleria buildout, designed the store and signed a LOI. Money gone.

So the dream wasn't about where we should go. It was about where we shouldn't. And strangely enough, that gave us this odd peace, but inside I was still very bitter because I was full force ahead with my own plans and I needed to accept the timing wasn't right. You know, sometimes clarity doesn't come from knowing exactly what to do next, it comes from eliminating what isn't yours. I had to be obedient and pull the plug on the project I'd started many years ago, until it was time.

And now, it's time. In fact, that's exactly why this place is called The Dream House.

Most people would assume it's because the boutique house itself feels dreamy, and it certainly does. But the truth is, the name began long before we ever found the property. It began with that dream that redirected us. That dream that reminded us to trust something deeper than conventional wisdom. That dream that ultimately led us to the exact place we were supposed to be.

Without that dream, there would be no Dream House.

I think that's a lesson many of us need to hear. We spend so much time trying to force things that look successful, look impressive, or look like what everyone else is doing. Meanwhile, our spirit is quietly trying to tell us that something isn't aligned.

Not everything that's available to you is assigned to you. The more I sat with that realization, the more I became open to discovering more of Houston instead of imposing my assumptions on it. Then I rediscovered the house, which was the very first property I ever surveyed, but in that season it wasn't quite ready. Unrecognizable, even.

The moment I saw it again, after the dream, I stopped looking. I didn't see a retail location, I saw possibility. I saw women gathering and laughter floating through rooms. I saw girlfriends shopping together, celebrating and connecting.

Most of all, I saw home. What I'd want to feel, if I were building this for me. Located on Almeda Road in Houston's historic Third Ward, the house had something the other spaces didn't have.

Soul and you for sure can't manufacture that. You can't install it or decorate your way into it. It's either there or it isn't. And this house had it all, plus tons of black history to support it.

The inspiration for what would become the Sassy Jones Dream House came almost immediately. I wanted it to feel like the grown woman's version of a dollhouse. A place where beauty lived in every corner. Romantic farmhouse details. Soft whites. Warm woods. Thoughtful touches. The kind of space that invites you to slow down and stay awhile. Breathability is the mantra. Nothing like our flagship boutique, which is more about intentional glitz and glam, instead this boutique is more about architecture and product. Clean lines and simplicity. The product is the art.

So this is truly about creating an experience. A refuge, a style sanctuary. A reminder that our beauty still matters. You know, the older I get, the more I realize that beauty isn't frivolous, it's restorative. In a world that constantly asks women to give, solve, fix, manage, and carry, beauty gives something back to us. It's ours and we celebrate it starting from within, it naturally oozes outward, which is where we come in.

I'm building a space that reminds us to dream and maybe that's why this house means so much to me because It's not just a business milestone. It's a legit testimony of timing, patience and trust. A reminder that the first answer isn't always the right answer, a hard reminder that redirection isn't rejection.

A reminder that sometimes what appears to be the obvious path is simply preparing you to recognize the right one when it arrives. So if you're reading this while standing at your own crossroads, wondering whether to keep forcing something that doesn't quite fit, consider this your permission to pause.

Listen. Pay attention. Trust what keeps tugging at your spirit & learn what you can from it because the life you're meant for, rarely requires you to betray yourself to obtain it.

For me, that lesson led to a beautiful house on Almeda Road. And soon, that house will open its doors to women from all over Houston and beyond. My hope is that when you visit, you don't simply see a boutique, you see what's possible when faith becomes louder than fear. I hope you see what can happen when you trust the whisper.

With love,
